Greater Expectations: Living with Down syndrome in the 21st century
by Jan Gothard
Down syndrome is the most common cause of intellectual disability in Australia and renowned child health expert Professor Fiona Stanley calls Greater Expectations THE book to read if you have a child with Down syndrome. Based on more than sixty personal interviews and supported by scholarly research, the book shows the varied attitudes and approaches which together make up the rich experience of living with Down syndrome in a changing society. This moving, partly autobiographical, account is a must for all those people – parents, teachers, health professionals and policy makers – who make choices that affect people with Down syndrome. All author royalties generated from the sale of this book will go to the Down Syndrome Association of Western Australia.

The Butterfly - DSWA's logo
Down Syndrome WA embraced the butterfly as its logo very early in the development of the organisation and, appropriately, it has metamorphosed over the years. It is now a positive and uplifting shade of blue and quite individual in design and contour, making it immediately recognisable.The butterfly symbolises many qualities that we admire in people with Down syndrome and fits comfortably with DSWA's vision. It is, therefore a very appropriate logo that will help promote a positive image in the community.
Butterflies are fragile, delicate, beautiful - so too there is a vulnerability and a true beauty that is touching in people with Down syndrome.
Butterflies have very individual colours and designs - so too the colourful personalities of individuals with Down syndrome are infinite.
The metamorphosis of the caterpillar which emerges from its cocoon transformed into a magnificent butterfly is stunning and symbolises the potential that is in all people with Down syndrome.
The image of a butterfly in flight is also one which sits very comfortably with the vision that we have for all people with Down syndrome. Our vision is for people with Down syndrome to have the freedom to take flight, to live a life of their choice, to follow their dreams.
Each person is like a butterfly in the wind.
Some can fly higher than others;
But each one flies the best it can.
Why compare one against the other?
Each one is different.
Each one is special.
Each one is beautiful.
